Future Genealogies

In our first seminar with James- we were introduced to the ideas of genealogies and how similar it is in principle to graphic design; as visual communicators, it is our role to find a solution to any upcoming visual problems.

In our task we were told to pick a "condition" (an emerging event like "if it snows all winter" or if "dinosaurs came back"), and had to think what the result it would have on society, like politics, lifestyle trends and solutions to combat such events for instance.

Our group chose if "water is the new form of currency"; a few examples we discussed were the effect it would have on our environment, how we would cultivate water besides tapping water supplies, and perhaps the eventuality of banning water as a beverage and what effect that would have on people's lives; it may lead to "water dealers" dealing out water to others who want to illegally drink it. Because of this, you can see how it links to the family tree used within the presentation, and how such events have a cause and effect. If given more time we could have come up with more solutions this problem.

Though it was fun to come up with solutions and think of a possible future to these abstract ideas- it was also helpful for getting into the mind-set of a graphic designer, and how to eventually approach a brief when given.
